STEM Education has certainly grown in popularity over the last few years as it has entered the National limelight. As STEM Educators, we couldn’t be more excited about that growth. However, for us at Full S.T.E.A.M. Ahead, stopping at STEM leaves out some of the most important aspects of the whole movement. Here’s why we are so much more than a STEM program–we’re a STEAM Program.
STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, and has been come to represent the future of education. The STEM Movement grew largely out of a need to emphasize these skills to prepare kids for a future workplace that will have more of each of those disciplines than previous generations ever had. STEAM, however, takes things even a step further. S.T.E.A.M. stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (or if you ask us, the M should be for Music).
For us, the “A” in STEAM is critically important. Not only because the Arts (like STEM) are lacking representation in today’s current educational climate, but because the skills needed to be successful in STEM are so closely mirrored by the skills it takes to be successful in Art and Music. STEAM is more than a collection of disciplines, it’s an educational mindset that encompasses an immensely important set of skills. To us, teaching STEAM means teaching:

Perfect Pitch
Sing your heart out! In this half-day camp, students will hone their singing skills and vocal technique and build their repertoire. They will pick solo and group songs to learn, practice, and perform throughout the week. They will practice singing in harmony with others as well as alone. Solos are highly encouraged but not mandatory.
Ages 8 to 13
Electric Arts
Electric Arts is our half day, Arts focused STEAM Camp that combines electricity, art, and music. Students will design their own arts and electric integrated projects that play sounds and music while learning about various elements of art, design, and electricity.

Dates: July 15 – 19, 1 – 4pm
Music Tech
Half-day camp integrating music and technology. Students will use recording equipment and software to record and edit their own musical compositions. Students get a chance to play instruments and/or sing (their choice) or compose online while learning the scientific concepts that underpin music. Wear the headphones, sing into the microphone, and feel like a professional recording artist!
